iLaw acting on the largest case of 2011/2012

iLaw has been acting since 2010 in the JSC BTA Bank v Ablyazov and others dispute.  We are representing 8 of the corporate defendants in the chief element of what The Lawyer reported as a "mammoth battle". It is the largest piece of litigation in the UK courts over the past two years, with a value of of around US$ 6 billion.

The claim focuses on the alleged fraudulent behaviour of the former chair of the Kazakh JSC BTA Bank, Mr Mukhtar Ablyazov.  The Bank claims that a number of unlawful loans were made to our corporate clients.  This is denied, as is any connection to Mr Ablyazov, and the allegations are being vigorously defended.

Mark Culbert, head of iLaw's litigation team, explained "the complexity and value of this case is immense. The dispute involves multiple jurisdictions and raises issues of both Kazakh and English law.  It is a testament to the strength of our litigation practice that we have been instructed in the legal battle which have dominate the Commercial Court, and the headlines, for the past two years."
